The transition from the classroom to fieldwork presents unique challenges for students in the field of occupational therapy. This course explores the importance of supporting student wellness throughout this experiential learning process. Participants in this course will examine the challenges faced by students and fieldwork educators, including stressors related to preparedness, clinical demands, and role adaptation. Evidence-based strategies to implement will be discussed and reviewed through interactive discussions and breakout sessions. Emphasis will be placed on self-reflection, communication techniques, and peer support to promote resilience in both students and educators. Participants will also gain insight into available institutional and community resources to enhance wellness and mitigate burnout.

This course is designed for fieldwork educators, academic faculty, and students seeking to create a more supportive and sustainable fieldwork experience.

Objectives:

  • Describe the current mental crisis among students in higher education
  • Identify the common causes for stress during fieldwork experiences
  • Articulate specific strategies to support student and fieldwork educator wellness during fieldwork experiences.
