ILOTA Spring 2025 Leadership Development Program - Meaningful Mentorship: Creating Connections Through Self-Reflection and Skills-Building

Course Description:

Rehabilitative specialists and support service providers in the schools are starting to take on more leadership roles requiring responsibilities in management, program development, mentoring students and staff, as well as positions of leadership in the community through nontraditional practices. Many of these individuals create professional goals to increase coaching and leadership strengths with little knowledge on where to turn for direct skill development. Pooja A. Patel, along with the Leadership Development Program (LDP) team, will explore a unique approach to mentoring that can be used in your work and career, regardless of your formal title.

This virtual seminar will begin with Dr. Patel, who will guide participants through several approaches to mentoring. The seminar will conclude with interactive group sessions and discussion of challenges and opportunities for implementing mentoring into everyday clinical practice.

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will leave this session with:

  • Practical ideas to create connections and build relationships in your work setting, in ways that don't require a lot of time or energy.
  • Methods to put our values into action in mentoring others.
  • An increased understanding of factors that might be hindering a mentoring relationship — and how to address them.
  • Ways to ask better questions, to get better information, and develop a more effective mentoring bond between a mentor and mentee.
  • An understanding of our natural style of mentoring and communication as it relates to our work with others.

Additional Information about Dr. Patel and the ILOTA Leadership Development Program:

The Leadership Development Program was established to provide members of ILOTA with leadership training and ongoing mentorship, a unique path to developing leadership skills in Illinois by establishing mentor-mentee cohorts, as well as outcome-focused educational programs, to enable selected candidates to build a foundation of skills in leadership regardless of their field of endeavor. It accomplishes this by bringing individuals with a high degree of leadership skills together with those with less experience but who share a passion for personal and professional growth in leading. The Leadership Development Program offers avenues for Occupational Therapy practitioners who are leading and assisting others in their work, as well as for clinicians looking for ways to further their professional development to advance the growth of occupational therapy in Illinois.
