This session introduces participants to the concept of arts-based training programs and their benefits within occupational therapy education. Participants will examine original research findings based on collaboration between the Art Institute of Chicago and Rush University, and gain insight into how they can utilize arts-based activities to teach the concepts of empathy, collaboration, and client-centered communication (including active listening and observation). Strategies for integrating activities into in-person and online learning will be presented.

Recommended Activity: Spend 10 minutes creating art that illustrates your perspective on the concept of “vulnerability” in occupational therapy. You can express yourself through drawing, taking a picture, sharing a video, writing, or using any other media. After you complete your illustration, share your work in this Jamboard: https://jamboard.google.com/d/1x6ANDqBKDHQ9et3DJ59dSMWuhOMhMGOhDxc8LQSCoE4/edit?usp=sharing

In the Jamboard, you can:

  • “Expand the Frame Bar” and “Add” a “New Frame” to share your work with others.
  • Upload your work by adding a “sticky note,” “image,” or a “text box” to a new Jamboard panel.
  • Explore others’ work in this Jamboard by scrolling through the “Frame Bar.”

This collection of artwork will be used as a catalyst for discussion at the "The Art of Reflective Practice" session led by Sam Ramos on November 18th.

Note: This session serves as a supplement to the live workshop on November 18, 2022 and is intended to offer insight into research and educational application of art-based instruction.
